Bastimentos Island is one of the largest islands in Panama’s Bocas del Toro archipelago, off the Caribbean coast in the country’s northwest. Much of the island remains covered by tropical forest, wetlands, mangroves, and coastal vegetation, with small communities located around sheltered bays. Bastimentos is closely associated with the Bastimentos Island National Marine Park, which protects both terrestrial and marine ecosystems around the island. Its beaches, reefs, forests, and quiet settlements give it a character distinct from busier parts of the Bocas del Toro archipelago, while water taxis provide connections with nearby Isla Colón and other islands.

Bastimentos has a diverse cultural identity shaped by Afro-Caribbean and Indigenous communities. Old Bank is an important Afro-Antillean community where local traditions can be seen in architecture, music, food, and everyday life. Ngäbe communities are present in areas including Salt Creek and Bahía Honda, where community-based tourism introduces visitors to traditional foods, crafts, customs, and knowledge of the surrounding environment. The island's history is also connected to fishing, agriculture, and banana cultivation, which brought workers and families from different parts of the Caribbean. These communities remain an important part of Bastimentos's cultural landscape.

Bastimentos Island National Marine Park covers beaches, tropical forests, mangroves, coral reefs, and surrounding marine habitats. Red Frog Beach is known for its forest trails and small red frogs, while Wizard Beach and Long Beach provide more remote stretches of Caribbean shoreline. The Zapatilla Cays, located within the protected area, are surrounded by clear waters suited to snorkeling and diving. The park also provides habitat for sea turtles, sloths, monkeys, caimans, dolphins, birds, and the Panamanian golden frog. Trails through the forest lead to beaches, mangroves, and other ecosystems, while nearby waters contain coral formations and marine wildlife.

Food on Bastimentos reflects its Afro-Caribbean heritage, with coconut, plantains, seafood, rice, spices, and tropical fruits appearing in local cooking. Old Bank is particularly associated with dishes that combine coconut with Caribbean seasonings, along with traditional music and community gatherings. Visitors participating in Indigenous community tours may also encounter locally prepared foods and cacao products. A distinctive feature of Bastimentos is the close relationship between cultural communities and protected ecosystems. The island's national marine park includes areas used by local residents for fishing and other traditional activities, making conservation and community life closely connected across the landscape.
